Academic Experience
Lecturer & Senior Research Engineer
2019 - present
MET Gateway Research Centre
Dept. Mechanical Engineering, GMIT
Alongside teaching Engineering in Business in GMIT, I currently work as a Senior Research Engineer in the MET Gateway Research Centre (together with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, GMIT) in Galway. I manage a collaboration with a major medical device company to research, design, and test a novel medical device to solve a cardiovascular medical problem. This involves experimental design and testing of novel materials, data analysis and troubleshooting, planning and organising, working to tight deadlines and meeting targets, while working in close collaboration with our industry sponsors.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
2016 - 2019
Dept. Biomedical Engineering, NUI Galway.
I conducted research together with Prof. Laoise McNamara and Dr. Ted Vaughan investigating bone mechanics to understand bone fracture during osteoporosis and diabetes. I employed a variety of techniques to examine the structure and composition of healthy, dibetic and osteoporotic bone with a view to developing a predictive tool for assessing fracture risk.
2015 - 2016
Dept. Mechanical and Materials Engineering, UCD.
I worked for a year as a postdoctoral research fellow under Dr. Neal Murphy and Dr. Alojz Invankovic. This project involved designing a predetermined grain structure which was then laid down using additive manufacturing (3D printing) techniques. These printed "green bodies" were then sintered into the final super-hard compact product used in deep sea drilling and heavy manufacturing.
PhD Student, TCD
2012 - 2015
Dept. Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
I completed a PhD under Prof. David Taylor into the study of Insect Cuticle and other natural materials. I took a traditional engineering approach to analyse this interesting material about which relatively little is known.
I also acted as teaching assistant, supervising several Final Year Projects, giving several lectures, laboratory demonstrations, class tutorials, and private tutoring for several final year BAI and MAI subjects in TCD, including Forensic Materials, Advanced Materials Engineering Vibrations and Multibody Dynamics.

Awards:

Work Experience
2012 - 2015:
Forensic Engineer, Trinity College Dublin
I aided Prof. David Taylor in analysing failed components and materials due to which a court case or lawsuit is pending. We analysed the specimens using a variety of tests and microscopy to determine the cause and mechanism of failure. Materials examined varied widely - from bicycles to storage tanks, prosthetic hips to cladding on large structures.
2011:
Design Engineer, Shuf-Fetterolf, Philadelphia, USA
I worked in the design department of this company producing, altering and modifying drawings of valves for use in the petrochemical, biomedical, pharma and polymer processing industries. I also worked on machining and assembly of these valves in the workshop.
2007/8:
Software Trainer, Helix Health, Tallaght, Dublin 24
I trained pharmacists, GPs and consultants throughout Ireland how to use custom built software packages and hardware systems to best run their practices.
